Life skills training at Zimpeto
Once they have grown to adulthood and leave us to make lives of their own, our young men and women need the skills that will translate into paid work to support themselves and their families. Zimpeto's Children's Director, Inacio Natingue has, since he began work at the Centre several months ago, been working hard to set up skills training opportunities for the youth who live here.
Our young men are currently being trained in haircutting and the other Centre kids are making the most of their need for practice. Afternoons will find a dozen or more boys in the school's computer lab, learning how to repair computers. Others are being trained as locksmiths and plumbers. The carpentry project continues to produce quality furniture while at the same time giving several of our youth the skills they need to eventually start businesses of their own. And the farm project is not only equipping some with farming experience but also provides delicious, fresh fruit and vegetables to the Centre kitchen.
The older girls have been learning sewing for several years now and continue to produce quality products that Zimpeto's visitors buy in bulk to take home with them as gifts with a Mozambican flavour. Which reminds me, Christmas is coming…
In August and September, some of our children and youth had the amazing opportunity of appearing on television several times to speak about their activities and to demonstrate their newly-found skills.
In the school holidays soon to begin, many of the high-schoolers will do work experience in their very long summer break. They will work in construction, in a locksmith store, and at the newly opened National Stadium just up the road.
Please pray for the future of Zimpeto's children, many of whom are reaching towards adulthood with dreams God is beginning to fulfill one step at a time. And if you're in need of a cheap haircut or a new skirt, you know where to find us!
